Bags of Hope is a non-profit organization based in Johannesburg, bringing sparks of light to women going through dark times. We aim to restore dignity and hope with a small gift:a handbag full of goodies and a bible. We have visited, and will continue to visit annually, over 20 shelters in Gauteng.
Our team consists of professional women from different walks of life: our founder Hetty Johnson is a nursery school teacher; Karen Krige is a health professional; Aimee Howard is a teacher; Ash Krige is a student ; and Glin Shortt is the Ridgeway church secretary: Tania Gil is a business woman and Mbali Radebe is a teacher.
“In 2014, while on holiday, a friend of mine was involved in Bags of Hope in the small town of George. On my way back to Joburg, I thought it would be a wonderful idea to set up something similar here. After contacting my friends and family, and feeling the enthusiasm from everyone the idea touched, our first shelter drop-off happened soon after I got back to Johannesburg. To date, we’ve given out over 2000 bags to women in need.”
